The Didactic Possibilities of Film Titles is a performative lecture that looks at the design and content of the titles and intertitles in mainstream Black films from 1990 – present, including Do The Right Thing, Boyz N Tha Hood, The Color Purple, among others. I’m interested in the didactic messages that can be gleaned from these films. Early cinema auteur Oscar Micheaux believe that he was instructing the black community and I think many other black filmmakers feel the same way. In this talk I accept their messages as gospel and imagine a short sermon inspired by the silver screen.
